Medals for top 3/5 athletes for Team awards.
NON-ATHLETIC AWARDS:
Athlete of the Year
Varsity Athlete of the Year
These two awards are for AlaskaYESS Seniors Only, and we are taking nominations for these awards.
Coaches should send the nominee’s name, years with the program, and a statement as to why this
athlete should be considered for this award. Keep in mind they need to be athletes who have
benefitted the State Program as well as their team, and served at some capacity on the state level,
whether with AKYESS Varsity Team or as a Youth Advisor to the Board.
Nominations close for these awards on March 31.
Academic Excellence!
These recognitions will be awarded to any AlaskaYESS athlete in any division. Pass/Fail grades do
not qualify. This requires a progress report or 3rd quarter report card with a minimum 4.0 grade
average. This MUST be turned in NLT April 30!
HOA are not eligible for HAA awards. If a minimum of 3 Collegiate athletes compete, we will develop a
divisional HAA Collegiate award. Collegiate athletes are not eligible for HOA awards. All awards are nongender unless there are a minimum of 7 lady athletes in a division. Ladies or Collegiate must be
registered NLT April 30 to build awards and medals.
PLEASE NOTE: We will NOT mail awards, and we will not award a non-athletic award to an athlete that is not present at
the Awards Ceremony! This includes Academic Excellence awards, which will be awarded to athletes who complete the
2024-2025 season by competing at State Championship.
REGISTRATION: We will develop an online registration for State, as well as a bulk paper registration for teams. Bulk
registrations must be paid with one check, please. Ammo must be ordered at time of registration, and will be available
in 12 or 20 ga, with priority going to traveling teams. We anticipate the cost will be $9/box.
RULES: Please read our AlaskaYESS Rules & Protocol for State, in addition to the USAYESS Guidebook. We do
enforce the rules at our events. Please ensure your athletes are familiar with the rules.
EVENTS: AlaskaYESS State Championship has always been a flat fee for all events. We do not offer a la carte events.
The HOA Grand Champion Team, HOA, HOA Runner-Up, High Lady will be based on ALL events, so the full 500-target
schedule. HAA may be determined by ALL events – TBD May 1.
Athletes are welcome to participate in all the Optional events provided that they are familiar with the protocol, rules, and
process of each of the disciplines. The only exception would be Helice, which is unique, and we encourage athletes to
experience this exciting discipline, time permitting.
All events have strict time limits, and our Field Sporting with Helice is no exception! Field Sporting will be 5 stations, 1 or
2 of which will include a total of 10 Helice targets, with one hour to complete all 50 targets. Due to the nature of Helice,
the targets will be random, and their flight is not predictable, so understand that when the target is thrown, unless
declared “Bird Again” [Helice term for “No Bird”] the target is legal and additional targets will not be thrown if the shooter
balks. Due to time constraints, the stations utilized for Field Sporting will be part of the Walkthrough on Friday, with
target trajectories or hoops changed prior to the Walkthrough. All participants in Field Sporting are expected to clean the
Helice stations of targets after the completion of their flight.
AlaskaYESS has a few rules that diverge from NGB and USAYESS rules. In Skeet, to reduce waste of targets, ammo,
time, and confusion for referees, “proof doubles” are handled in the following manner: If the Athlete is visibly tracking the
correct target of a pair, and they simo, the call is “Dead Pair.” If they are tracking the wrong target first it is a “Lost Pair”
regardless of the result of firing on the targets. Our referees do not tell athletes which target to shoot first at each
station. Our Wobble Trap is always one shot, not two, to save cost (and supply) of ammo. We do not allow athletes to
“Bump-up” a division. Once promoted, an athlete remains in that division for the remainder of the year. Senior Varsity =
80% or better, Junior Varsity = 60% or better, Entry athletes (9th-12th grades) are brand new to shotgun sports.
DRESS CODE: In Alaska, athletes are not permitted to wear their hat backwards. Shorts must be longer than the
shooting vest. No crocs or sandals or heelless footwear. See specific rules in AlaskaYESS Rules & Protocol.
LONG DISTANCE TEAMS: We recommend lodging in Mat-Su: Hotels, VRBO, or RV/tent camping on-site at 7
th Summit
or BRSP. We do not handle campsite reservations for BRSP. 7
th Summit is located 11 miles outside of Wasilla. We do
have a great contact for Turo van rentals! We strongly recommend you make travel arrangements prior to March 2025,
as flights, lodging, and vehicle rentals fill up quickly for summer tourism in Alaska!
7th Summit is an off-grid facility, with minimal amenities at this time. There is no running water, we have porta potties,
and trash must be taken off-site when you leave. We do have a very large BBQ set-up with a stove-type burner.
We recommend ATV’s for those guests who have limited walking ability or medical issues. We do not have rental ATV’s
or carts. With over 3 miles of Walkthrough trails available, last year’s State course was just over a mile in length. Skeet
fields are approximately ½ mile from the parking lot, with limited parking along the access road, and fields are not visible
from the access road, so guests are welcome to bring folding chairs to watch the skeet events.
Please contact me if you have any other questions or concerns. We hope to see you all at State
